Pursue Gentleness

WHY SHOULD I PURSUE GENTLENESS?

1 Timothy 6:11 tells us, “But you, oh man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience and gentleness.

If we are to pursue a life of righteousness, godliness, faith, love patience and gentleness, then what are we to flee?  Look back at verse 10 in 1 Timothy 6.  “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”  Money in and of itself is not evil. It’s the love of money.  The love of money brings the polar opposite of gentleness.  It creates gargantuous greed.

Gentleness, although last in this list, is not the least to be pursued.  The Psalmist in chapter 18 says of God in verse 35: “You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great.”  Do you want to do great things for the glory of God?

      1.  Pursue gentleness for the glory of God!

Matthew tells us in the beatitudes:

      2.  “Blessed are the gentle for they shall inherit the earth.”

Wow, what an amazing blessing,  for all who choose to display gentleness.  To inherit the earth?  What can this possibly mean?  Psalm 37:9b says; “the gentle shall possess the land.”  Gentle people wait upon the Lord.  Have you ever known anyone who seemed to have the same gentle spirit, no matter what happens? These type people are the same on Monday as they are on Sunday.  Another version uses the word meek and says: “The meek shall inherit the earth.”  To inherit means to obtain something someone has left in your name.  Jesus who is now in heaven; left the earth when He died on the cross in our place.  He entrusted the earth to His children; to tell others about Him and to take care of His creation.  We inherited the earth.  When a person pursues gentleness, they are pursuing righteousness, godliness, faith, love and patience.  Those traits just ooze out of a gentle spirited person.

     3.  Pursue gentleness and you will sow seeds into the lives of non-Christians.

Do you have family, friends, neighbors or co-workers that you long to see come to Christ?  Non-Christians are watching to see if your life is any different from theirs.  Young and old alike; watch to see how you respond to the adversities, trials and tribulations that life brings.  Are you angry all the time, or do you display the attribute of gentleness?  God says in Proverbs 15:1, “A soft answer turns away wrath.”  Seed sowing has the possibility of producing salvation in the lives of those who notice the difference in your daily life.

     4.  Pursuing gentleness and the testimony of God’s grace, will be on display for all to see.

Grace, grace God’s grace to you and on display through you; should be exhibited everyday, twenty-four-seven; three hundred and sixty five days a year.  Are you a living, breathing testimony to the gentleness of your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ?  Please stop right now and examine yourself.  Ask the Lord to search you and know your heart.  Tell Him you long to display gentleness  even to the meanest; grumpiest person in your life AND MEAN IT!
