Nothing Whispers 'I Love You' Like Laughter

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

“Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, ‘The Lord has done great things for them,” Psalm 126:2.

Last night, Rip, myself and Hailey (our 13 year old), were watching a commercial that showed precious babies enjoying their meal of baby food. One darlin’ baby after another had big round eyes and bouncing smiles that just glowed with contentment. It was so adorable to see their elated faces while enjoying their food! But the last baby the commercial spotlighted was a little girl sitting all slumped over, head hanging down, her arms were draped across her highchair and she was sound asleep. I mean, she was just plum passed out! She clearly had a happy tummy.

After we all got tickled at that, Rip didn’t pass up the “cue” to quickly share with Hailey, “That was Lisa a couple of weeks ago. We went to Cracker Barrel, and she threw down on some chicken and rice, 2 sides, biscuits and then asked for an apple crisp cobbler. We weren’t down the highway in no time before she was gone! Knocked out, all slumped over in the car, head hanging down and sleeping hard!”  Hailey and I laughed so hard as Rip (of course) acted out the whoooole thing. He then said, “She looked just like that baby, all slumped over, tummy happy and gone! Lights out!” hahaha! We laughed and laughed so hard last night because it’s true, but to see Rip act it all out was hilarious!

When we pulled onto our drive way that night, I woke up and said, “I don’t know what happened but I zonked!” Rip looked at me with that ‘I know what you did’ look on his face and said, “Momma got her belly full, that’s what happened!”  It was how he said it that had me laughing for days.  Then again last night, just watching him tell that story to Hailey, we were all on the floor!

What does this have to do with whispers of love?  Truth is, we all have our “stuff”, our undesirable situations and unwanted difficulties in life and the Rippy household is no different. We’re like you…we have things in our life that tries to weigh us down and attempts to consume us. I can pretty much guarantee that every single person who will read this IS going through a trying season, a heartache, a spiritual challenge in some way. But God’s Word says,

“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken,” Psalm 55:22.

The word for cares, in some translations, is the word burden and it implies one’s circumstances. Cast means to get rid of it. The promise in Psalm 55:22 is this – the Lord will uphold the believer in the struggles of life. You don’t have to uphold yourself. You don’t have to uphold someone else. He clearly instructs an action that, when we obey, has a wonderful blessing attached — If you will, “Cast your cares on Him,” then “He will sustain you.”  IF YOU WILL, HE WILL.  It’s a matter of obedience.

“Laughter is life’s shock absorber. If you want to have less stress in your life, learn to laugh at your circumstances. Somehow, you must find the fun in the frustrating.” – Rick Warren

And when you and I believe that, we will act on that. Then His sustaining power ushers in genuine peace, joy, smiles of belief that aren’t forced, but are reflective of His sustaining work in our heart. We then have the supernatural ability to live confident and that confidence enables us to smile into our days, to keep on laughing, to enjoy the blessings of laughter, and to keep on sharing in that blessing within our homes….what a whisper of love that truly is.

Be Inspired: God sees. He sees what you are facing and what you are presently going through. But His promise to you is to sustain you. Did you know that people who laugh live longer? It’s true. Proverbs 14:30 says, “A relaxed attitude lengthens a man’s life.” (TLB) Today, will you cast and relax? Then the ability and freedom to laugh will fill the walls of your heart and home.
