Oscar Worthy or Kingdom Worthy?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

\Dazzling gowns, bright lights, jaw-dropping jewels, adorable handbags and shoes…who doesn’t love watching celebrities walk the red carpet on Oscar night?  As I watched both my Facebook and Instagram feeds buzz with activity over details like this a couple of weeks ago during the Oscars, I started thinking…what if we got just as excited over saved souls as we do celebrities on Oscar night?  What if we packed stadiums and convention centers for God with the same zeal and excitement as we do for our favorite band? Isn’t God worthy of time and attention like that? Besides, He died so that we could be set free. Ouch…..I don’t know about you, but that steps on my toes a little. So, what can we do to give the same glory and recognition to God?

We can honor God with even the smallest things. In Corinthians, we are told: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

That means whether we are walking our dog, washing the dishes, helping children with homework or taking a meal to a friend who has been ill….we can do it with a joyful heart and thank Him for loving us despite our shortcomings.

My daughter Addison is 8 years old and gave her life to Christ earlier this year. I sobbed as I watched our pastor baptize her in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. As a mother, it was one of my proudest moments obviously.  However, as a child of God, I was even more excited to see a sister in Christ added to the kingdom. Now, that’s reason to celebrate!  And celebrate we did! We invited family and friends to join us at one of her favorite restaurants following the service where we enjoyed ice cream cake and several people gifted her with sweet mementos to remind her of the important decision she made. Although it wasn’t anything fancy and didn’t require an Oscar wardrobe, I wanted her to always remember that day. I wanted her to understand how important and life-changing this decision would be for her.

My prayer is that we can offer the same amount of time and energy into doing God’s work as we do for other things of this world. I pray that we can fall in love with God’s word just like we fall in love with quotes from movies and songs.  I pray that we can “oooh” and “aahh” over the ways that people glorify God just like we “oooh” and “aaaah” during their walk down the red carpet.  I pray that instead of being Oscar-worthy that our lives will be Kingdom-worthy. Will you join me? Will you help me celebrate and get excited about the majesty of our King?

Sara girl, how powerful! We as Christians fall into the trap of placing these celebrities on pedastals made only for the Lord Jesus. Thank you so much!
