Not Too Close

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

“For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”  Ephesians 5:31

My friend is talking of moving closer to her kids; so she can be in closer proximity to her grandchildren.  Her daughter wants her parents to move closer to her; however she said “not too close.” Our married children need their space.  They are perfectly capable of figuring out life on their own. They do not want or need to be under our daily scrutiny.

God is so good to bring us our mates.  We learned on our own the whole marriage scenario and so will our children.  When your daughter married; the pastor said, “Who gives this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?  Your husband said, “Her mother and I.”  The matrimony knot was tied and she was betrothed until death do they part.

Another part of the vows spoken, stated: “forsaking all others.” That does not mean dis-honoring your parents; it just means leaving the home of your family of origin and cleaving to your husband or wife.

We only offer advice to our married kids when they ask for it.  “What God has joined together; let no man separate.”   The job of “training your kids in the way they should go” is over.  Our married children need their space. They no longer need us to watch over them.  We must not get our feelings hurt when our kids don’t want us to live next door to them.

It’s their time to “become as one” and live their lives under the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Prayer in Motion:

Lord, after my children marry; help me to give them their space to learn and grow as a married couple.  You are the One who brought them together.  Help me to pray for, encourage and “help” only when asked or invited.  Thank You Jesus for my family of origin as well as my precious in laws.  May I be the parent and “parent in law” that You intend for me to be.  In Jesus Name.  Amen
