Mom Guilt–Balancing Work and Home

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Suffer from mom guilt? Honestly, what mom doesnt’? Luckily, you aren’t alone!

Guilt creeps into our world daily as mothers. As a single mom working full-time to provide for my children, my job is vital to their well-being. So what happens when I let guilt over missing a field trip or not sending Pinterest-worthy cupcakes to the class Valentine’s party consume me? I become even more exhausted and I completely lose focus of what really matters—true, undivided attention for my children.

If I asked my children if they’d rather I: A) chaperone a field trip where I’m stressed and guilty over missing a day of work or B) keep our Friday night date of snuggling under the covers with a big bowl of freshly popped popcorn and M&Ms while we enjoy a movie. Which one do you think they will choose? Popcorn and movies will win every single time.

Children only want our true time and attention.

In this season of my life, I’m learning that I can’t do it all and that’s okay. Let me say that again… I can’t do it all and that’s okay! That doesn’t make me less of a mother nor does it make you less of one either. Skip decorating the fancy cookies and cupcakes and pick some up at the store if it means that you can spend ten extra minutes watching your child perfect her pirouette. Besides, who are we really decorating the cupcakes for…our children or other mothers?

I promise years from now that your child will not remember what the cupcakes looked liked, but he will certainly remember that smile on your face as you watched him ride his bike without training wheels for the first time.

Just like our children want our attention, there’s someone else that wants our time. His name is Jesus. Can you give him 10-15 minutes of your undivided attention today?

Lamentations 3:27-28 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. Let him sit alone in silence when it is laid on him.
