Joy Is For Today (by Kimberly Fulgham)

“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10)

Joy, pure joy, comes from having an intimate connection with God.  We always want to connect joy with an emotion.  Why is that?  I think that our society does a terrible job relaying messages to us that joy comes from an immediate situation or feeling.  If we obtain this position, have this house, drive this car, have these kids, or marry this type of man/women, then we will be happy….but wait! Is happiness the same thing as joy?

Happiness is defined as “a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.”  Did you get that!?!  You have to have joy to be happy.  Stay with me here.  It amazes me that if you define the word joy, it states that it is “the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying.”  However, my Bible defines it as the second part of the fruit of the Spirit given to me the moment I ask Jesus into my heart.

Joy is always accessible to us through the Holy Spirit because God has given it to us.  Not only do we always have access to it, but according to Nehemiah, it is our strength.  It is the enemy that tries to deceive us into thinking that when we finish this, or obtain that, or resolve something, we will experience joy.

When you really think about it ……. joy is for today!

Joy does not come tomorrow, on Friday, next week, or next month.  Joy comes today through the Holy Spirit.  Sometimes we need to ask the Holy Spirit to produce it through us, but we have it and it will never leave us.  Joy is our strength for today.
I challenge you this week, when you start to fall into the enemy’s trap, to remember that the Holy Spirit imparted joy to you the minute you asked Christ into your heart.  However, lasting joy comes from intimately knowing God.  If you haven’t received His salvation, just know that Jesus is waiting to give you joy.  All you have to do is ask Him.

Joyously yours,

Kimberly
