How to Create a Country Kitchen

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Happy Monday friend! Hope you’re ready for another wonderful week?!

At the very end of this post is a VERSE FOR THE WEEK that I want to start sharing every single Monday in my blog … a verse for us to just meditate on, study even, pray, and claim! So, be sure to subscribe to the Newsletter (above) because when you do, you will not miss a single thing – all the blogs, bible studies, interior decorating or design tips, and plenty of inspiration for your heart an home!

One thing Rip and I love about our little blue farmhouse is just how its build, (starting in the late 1800’s), has evolved through the years. There was the simple one bedroom/one bath/kitchen home, then in 1951, there was quite a huge addition added to the little farmhouse, then in 1978 there was another addition. And when we walk through this sweet home, one thing that stands out big time is — it’s a country house! It’s not a french acadian, a modern farmhouse, a colonial or a tuscany style house. No, with all these wood windows, five panel solid wood doors, french doors with all original brass hardware, small planked wood floors and that good o’ 1950’s sheet linoleum that was the big trend in flooring….it all just begs for country decor!

So, how are we creating our little country kitchen? … …  (and it’s still a work in progress…needs some window treatments, the floors we discovered under carpet and they need refinishing, etc.)

Let the good solid bones of the house still have “a say” in what you do.  When I first saw our kitchen nook, it was that darlin’ corner cabinet that I knew would nevah’ evah’ leave it’s spot…so that meant a round table with a round rug centered below the chandelier. That little corner cabinet has been there for many years and when I open the bottom cabinets, to store my mason jars, and recipe box, I can only imagine if there was ever a load of mason jars tucked inside full of pickled tomatoes, or fig preserves, or plum jelly.

Country means color. Bring in the greens, blues, yellows and any cute checkered print or vintage floral  you can find! It works, when tastefully done. But it just works in a country kitchen! We have drapes coming that will add not only color but texture to that little nook. The white distressed saucer is actually the bottom to a terra-cotta pot, that I found at Lowes. They sold me the saucer separately and I brought it home, chalk painted it white, distressed it, and sealed it with loads of clear wax. After it cured for about 3 months, it was ready to be used. So, I either use it as a center piece for our table, or I will use it to serve up a big o’ salad. It’s a handy little piece!

Texture, texture and more texture. It’s one of the was to create inviting warmth to any space, and it’s in using plenty of texture. The soft rug, upholstered wood chairs, burlap placemats with soft linen napkins, and a big chunky metal floral napkin ring. For me, it’s just cozying it up. I found the 2 antique dippers online and immediately thought how cute they’d be holding a plant and a small bunch of flowers, and those chubby little birds…those are our salt & pepper shakers. (I know…I couldn’t resist!! Found those at a garage sale!

Keep decor “country” – popping in contemporary pieces is always fun, but a true country kitchen is country down to the detail of each piece of decor. Bread boxes, baskets, china and delicate serving pieces … it all works in a country kitchen. Grab up a Country Living Magazine the next time your out and about, and flip through … what do see? Color! Texture! And unique old-fashioned pieces of furnishings, art and some of the cutest kitchen accessories.

Unique pieces for serving. The coffee service is actually Rip’s grandmothers. We chalk painted it, distressed it a good bit, and use it for serving coffee – the inside is full of cups and our surplus of coffee supplies

.

Have a chalkboard. Ok, so this may not be an authentic piece for a country kitchen, but it sure comes in handy when you want to write bible verses or inspirational messages to your family and friends!! Mine was given to me by my friend, Martha Falvey, and I knew right when I saw it where it would end up… in our little country kitchen, above the coffee service!

The etched glass mirror is something Rip found and then it found it’s home right there! It’s vintage. Has signs of age, (THAT HE AND I BOTH LOVE!!!). But it was the perfect little addition!

I like to have “something” where I can change out flowers for the season….and it was just time to go ahead and nudge spring on its way! The side screen door is where our guests come, and I just want the first thing they see is a bunch of “happy” right there welcoming them in! This metal mailbox is another antique Rip and I found at one of our favorite antique shops in north Mississippi!
