Facing the Day In Your Armor

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

“Rise and shine..it’s time to get up!” I fully believe my kids detest the sound of my voice on school mornings– just as I hated it when my mom would come flick the light on in my room when I was in elementary school.  They pull the covers back over their heads and lay there until the very last minute giving themselves only 20 minutes to get ready and prepare for the day.  And then magically, it’s all my fault that they can’t find their favorite pair of shoes or that I’m rushing them to brush their teeth since we should have already left the house ten minutes prior.  And as we are pulling out of the driveway, I’m reminded that it’s garbage day, but there the garbage sits in the garage.  Fail! Can I please start this day over?

Does this sound familiar?  As a a mom with young children, I would like to think I’m not alone. Mornings can be hectic.  In fact, if we don’t prepare ourselves, they can be downright ugly and exhausting.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked through the doors of my office feeling like I’ve run a marathon before the day even starts.

But, guess what? There’s hope, my friend.  If you have followed any of Lisa Rippy’s videos (If not, check out the blog archives to view them), you know how important time management and starting your day off with God can be.  One of the reasons starting your day off with God is so important is because it allows us to “put on the full armor of God” to equip us for our day, so that we are ready to tackle whatever is handed to us.

Ephesians 6:10-13 says: Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

Every family is different and it may take some time to streamline what works best for you family, but here’s what I’m doing this week to help make the mornings run a little smoother for me and my children.

EACH SCHOOL NIGHT:
-Prepare lunches for the next day ad have lunchboxes in the fridge ready to go.
-Review/check/sign backpacks and folders each evening and have them by the back door  (or place in the car the night before if that works best)

-Have each child have their outfit or school uniform laid out and ready for the next morning prior to bedtime.

MORNING:
-Get up 30 minutes earlier than normal and spend at least 15 minutes in prayer and Bible time
-Take a shower and start getting myself ready
-Wake children up and finish getting myself ready while they get themselves dressed
-Prepare breakfast for children and help with last minute crises that arise (i.e.—where’s my library book? I need a jacket. I need money for the book fair today. And yes, I’ve heard all of these things).

Morning routines are just like any other process and can sometimes take some time to get used to. Don’t be afraid to try several different tactics to see what works best. With some simple planning ahead and putting on the full armor of God to start your day, you can turn your mornings into your best time of the day.

Do you have a morning routine that works great for you and your family? How do you make mornings less hectic? I would love to hear from you.

So helpful Sarah! Putting on the armor of God first thing in the morning is something our sweet Miss Nan taught us young moms to do and it’s so true…every word you’ve said. AND I love your routines, too!! One way Rip and I make our morning routine less hectic is we set the coffee pot for in the morning and get the table set for breakfast..helps so much!
