Do Not Be Afraid

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid. But Jesus came and touched them and said, “Arise, and do not be afraid.”  Matthew 17:6-7

As a child; I was afraid of my shadow.  I grew up in a very safe and secure home; but in my mind; there was a booger around every corner; under the bed, in the closet, and behind the door. What in the world?    Children have very vivid imaginations.

My mom taught me a verse from Psalm 56:3 that declares; “What time I am afraid I will trust in Thee.”  I would say it over and over again and yet; in the middle of the night, I would still cry out in fear of every noise, every shadow, every little thing that goes bump in the night.

There are many fearful children who grow up to be fearful adults. The disciples had daily walked with Jesus for three years and yet they trembled at the voice of God. God’s voice is terrifying; fall on your face kind of terrifying. He is Holy and we are not.  We should fear and have holy reverence for the Lord our God.  Jesus came to them and said,

“Get up, and do not be afraid.”

How do we overcome those deep rooted fears that manifest themselves on every corner?  We must remember the attributes and characteristics of the Lord our God.

“God is not a God of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

The same voice that spoke the words, “This is my Beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!”  was the same one who said; “Get up and do not be afraid.”  The voice of God that demands us to hear and revere Him; also tells us: “Do not be afraid.”  He’s such a good Father.  May we respond appropriately to His voice.

Prayer:

Lord of Heaven and earth; I praise You in the morning, praise You in the evening and praise You at the noon time too.  I will not be afraid of what man can do to me.  You are my Strong Tower. You are my Comfort and my Strength.  I love You Jesus and I trust You.  In Jesus Name.  Amen.
