Day 5: Trials And The Pastor's Marriage (Rhonda Love)

Read today’s Inspiration from Rhonda Love:

Under the pretense of planting flower bulbs hoping the neighbors wouldn’t notice I was on my knees crying out to God in desperation. Suffocating under the pressure of ministry problems I begged God to heal my broken heart that had been deserted by a church “friend”.  At times I sensed deep sorrow, other times the peace of God settled our anxious spirit.

During this painful transition the tension strained our marriage. Short tempers, brewing uproar and the kids were unsettled. Once we recognized the conflict we had to communicate to find resolve. Where do we turn when it hits the fan? Who mediates a marriage crisis for ministry husbands and wives? We’re the ones that are “supposed” to have all the answers and God forbid we’re honest about our own marital issues. Biblical marriage counseling is vital to the health of our marriage. Ministry has a way of consuming every ounce of our energy, I’m not disrespecting our calling but it’s imperative to find balance for daily demands, marriage, family, celebrations and grief. Thank God we have a handbook for all the madness: the written Word of God.

We often refer to the order of priority which has helped us over the years:

  1. God: Our personal relationship with Jesus Christ keeps our solid foundation intact.

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 ESV)

       2. Spouse: As we spend time with other couples, we’re finding #2 #3 are out of order. Fanning the flames in our own relationship is an example for our kids. When Dad & Mom are intentionally guarding over and strengthening the marital relationship the kids will be grounded and healthy too. Date your spouse!   Date night criteria:

  • A date doesn’t have to be costly. Most of us don’t have a date night budget. Be creative here.
  • Off limit topics: jobs, ministry or kids! What did you talk about before marriage? Goals, dreams and plans for the future.
  • Invest in conversation about each other. Ask questions such as: What are your dreams? (Think outside the box, dream outrageously). What are your goals? How is God speaking to you? How can I pray for you?

        3.  Kids: These precious littles are handcrafted by God. They’re needs are legit and demanding. When our firstborn was a little he refused to sleep through the night. In my exhausted and confused mental state we threw him in the bed with us. Can I have a do over? He would’ve been in his own space. Children and parents need to sleep in their own beds.

EVERYTHING ELSE FOLLOWS, you’ll figure out the order of priority.

Love,

Rhonda
