Being the Woman Your Man Needs – The Incredible Value of Diligence

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

“Do not lack diligence; be fervent in spirit; serve the Lord,” Romans 12:11.

What exactly does “diligence” mean:

1. diligence – (noun) – careful and persistent work or effort. (verb) Perseveringly attentive, steady and earnest
It means to live conscientiously, to be hard working, meticulous, to show perseverance, persistence, tenacity, dedication, commitment; not careless or negligent.

When our actions and behaviors demonstrate diligence, we are not only living in obedience to the Lord, but we are also living in such a way that meets needs in others, especially our man. When your man sees the strength of the Lord in you as make breakfast for your children, as you clean your home, as you make time to play, as you go to your jobs outside the home and as you care for your self, he sees that you are fervent in spirit.  As you make time to read your Bible, as you make time to pray, and as you cook, fold clothes, serve at your school, and as you give such special attention to the needs of your family, there is a very real need being met in the relationship and it’s this – the need for love.

Read again the definition of diligence, and this time think of Jesus. Do these words not describe the nature of our loving and attentive and dedicated Lord? His LOVE is everlasting. His LOVE is steady and earnest. His LOVE is not careless or negligent. His LOVE is committed and hard-working. His LOVE never ceases to work in and through our life. And what is so interesting is the Old English meaning of diligence literally is – “with love,” from the word “diligo” which means, “to love.”  “God is love.” 1 John 4:8   –  You see, when the verse says, “Do not lack diligence,” that can be paraphrased to say, “Do not lack love” because our Lord is an ‘abounding in diligence God.

Being God’s ideal woman does not start with being dynamic, but being diligent.

Be Inspired: To love is to live diligently. Some may criticize and see your diligence as being “controlling”, but that’s usually because they simply do not understand the power of diligence and what it “looks like” practically. Pray for them. But when it comes to your life and your relationship with your man, it’s an act of love to be diligent.

Pray and ask the Lord to teach you diligence. Ask Him to show you where you aren’t demonstrating diligence. Then, thank Him for His grace that allows you to share in His nature of being diligent. “Do not lack diligence; be fervent in spirit; serve the Lord,” is an instruction that only proves to usher in God’s best in our relationships, it’s exciting and energizing, too!

Here is the full context of Romans 12:9-21:

Christian Ethics
9 Love must be without hypocrisy. Detest evil; cling to what is good. 10 Show family affection to one another with brotherly love. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not lack diligence; be fervent in spirit; serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer. 13 Share with the saints in their needs; pursue hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. 16 Be in agreement with one another. Do not be proud; instead, associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Try to do what is honorable in everyone’s eyes. 18 If possible, on your part, live at peace with everyone. 19 Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for His wrath. For it is written: Vengeance belongs to Me; I will repay, says the Lord. 20 But

If your enemy is hungry, feed him.
If he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
For in so doing
you will be heaping fiery coals on his head.
21 Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.
