The Fleece

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

“So Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand as You have said look, I shall put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor’ if there is dew on the fleece only, ant it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as You have said. And it was so”  Judges 6:36-38a

No, it’s not the kind of sweater you wear.  I’m talking about sheep’s skin.  Gideon’s story.  He did not put on but put out “a fleece,” in order to be positively certain, he was hearing from God.

Putting out a fleece is not magical or hokey.  It involves prayer and faith.  I don’t make this a daily habit; however, when there’s a life altering decision to be made; I do put Gideon’s method into practice.

In verse 12 of Judges 6; The Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, while he was threshing wheat in the winepress.  The Angel said “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!” Gideon began to question all the bad things happening to his people.  This same Angel of God called Gideon to go in this mighty valor, and told Gideon he would save Israel from the hand of the Midianites.”

Gideon began to make excuses.  His “clan was the weakest in Manasseh and he was the least in his father’s house.”  The LORD then declares, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.”  Gideon began to beg for a sign that it was the LORD talking to him.  In his weakness, Gideon was full of fear and doubt.

Gideon put out an offering of meat and unleavened bread on a rock.  Then the Angel of the LORD consumed his offering. Gideon realized he had seen the Angel of the LORD so the LORD told Gideon, “Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die.”  God has said, “No one can see God and live.”

God ordered Gideon to tear down the altar of Baal and the wooden image beside it and build an altar to the LORD His God. This did not go ever well with the men of the city. They wanted to kill Gideon.  The Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon.  He called for his warriors, right before he put out his fleece to God.

My dear friend, when you find yourself in a battle; God wants to give you a plan of action.  He is a God of detail.  Honestly, it takes faith to put out a fleece.  It’s believing God to reveal the hidden things.  He wants you to know His plan.  If you seek Him, you will find Him, when you search for Him with your whole heart.

Your fleece could be any number of things.  God’s Spirit will direct your steps and order your path.  I would never presume to tell you what it should be.  God says, “His eyes are searching to and fro looking for those whose hearts long to be completely His.”  Wet fleece or dry fleece; God will show you what to do.

Prayer in Motion:

God, you are so good to reveal the hidden things.  Thank You for hearing and answering my petitions and requests.  You are so awesome!  I love you Lord!  In Jesus Name, Amen.
