Over Committed

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I tend to be overcommitted.  Those who know me, know this to be true.  I also know when you have too many irons in the fire; you weaken the framework for which you were created.

There are many good things we can choose to be involved in but God has equipped and ordained particular works for His children.  It’s important to be able to discern His correct path, through prayer and God’s Word.

Overcommitment leads to stress.  Stress leads to frustration and frustration leads to dissatisfaction.  Some people say stress actually motivates them but for the majority of the population, stress brings about tension, high blood pressure, ulcers, colon issues and all sorts of diseases.  We were not created to be everywhere and commit to every job anyone asks us to do.

If we would heed two of the verses in Psalm 37, we would be greatly helped; any time we think of overcommitting.  Verse 5 says “Commit your way to the LORD and do good;”…Verse 4 tells us to “Delight ourselves in the LORD, and He will give us the desires of our hearts.”

Even as a child, Jesus told His parents, He had to be about His Father’s business.  Right before He bowed His head and died, He said the words from the cross: “It is finished.”   Just as the Father had work for His Son to complete, He has special work for you to complete.  Ask Him, what would You have me to do? What would You have me to be involved in?  What is my purpose and am I fulfilling the purpose for which I was created?

Prayer In Motion:

Lord, show me if I’m overcommitted in any area of my life.  I want to be about Your business and on the path You have ordained for me.  Help me to know the difference between good and best.  In Jesus Name. Amen
