“Lord, may You be praised; teach me Your statutes,” Psalm 119:12.
“It was good for me to be afflicted, so that I could learn Your statutes,” Psalm 119:71
While reading in the Psalms, I noticed two words that seemed to be repeated over and over again – 1) teach and, 2) learn.
Today’s verses are two that I’ve been “sitting on” for a few days and I doodled in my journal these words:
“Living Christians are Learning Christians” – and since that doodling, the Lord has shown me verse after verse of just how true that phrase really is. Because God is so gracious, the renewed nature of a believer has a desire to learn His statutes, (His commands), which gets us in on living His nature. His holy nature. After all, in 1 Peter 1:15-16 it is written:
“As He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
We not only want to learn how to live holy, but we want our life to be molded by His holiness. Because if there is any one essential that defines the Christian’s new nature it is holiness – the holiness of God. We can’t practice holy “conduct” if we are not being taught and learning from our holy God. But as we continue to learn, our conduct becomes increasingly holy. And that is wonderful news!
The mercy and grace of a “teaching” God is something we must never take for granted. This is also why we need to treat His Word with respect and treat Him with reverence. Bottom line…if we are living Christians, we are learning Christians.
Lord, show me Your ways, teach me Your paths, guide me in Your truths and teach me, for You are God my Savior and my hope is in You all day long. Lord, help me to live and learn as a holy Christian.
