Light of the World

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  John 8:12

“Light of the world, You stepped out into darkness; opened my eyes let me see.  Beauty that made this heart adore you, all for loves sake became poor.  Here I am to worship.  Here I am to bow down.  Here I am to say that You’re my God. Your altogether lovely; altogether worthy, altogether wonderful to me.”

The words to this song echo in my heart and mind, as I think about the Light of Christ.

John 1:4-5  tells us “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.  The light shines in the darkness and  the darkness comprehended it not.”

John 1:9 tells us “The True light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.  He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know Him.”

Jesus is the Light of the world.  He cried out on the cross, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do….His last words were Father, “…into Your hands I commit my Spirit.” His head dropped down and the world became totally dark for three hours.  That’s the picture of a world without Christ.

Our world is totally dark without Him.  Almost daily we hear of mass murders. These life takers are blinded to the Way, the Truth and the Life. Their minds cannot comprehend the Light of the World.  No one can come to the Father except through Jesus Christ.  He came to bring life and light to the whole world.

Those who are Christ followers are salt and light in the world. When I was a child, there was a song called, “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine…One of the last lines says, “Don’t let Satan snuff it out, I’m gonna let it shine…You repeat the line three times.  He certainly tries to snuff out our lights and if possible our lives but the Light of the World will not allow it. Herod tried to find baby Jesus to have Him killed.  Jesus life could not be taken until He decided to lay it down for you and me.

This Christmas, may all Christians let their light so shine, that the world may see their good works and glorify the Father who is in heaven.

Prayer in Motion:

Lord, I know You are the Light of the World.  Open the eyes of the lost, to understand: You who created the light, are the Light. May we be light to those who are in darkness.  In Jesus Name. Amen
