Created in His Image

This may start off as a pretty predictable post about spring cleaning etc….. Just hang with me.

It just came over me. My closet needed to be purged. I have bought just a few new items for summer and spring and it made me take a look at what I have. I was horrified as I kept sorting through my things! Now you probably think the reason for my fright is that I felt so guilty over all I had and I thought of all the wasted money. While some of that is true, it was not the thing that spoke to me the loudest.

It was when I got to the portion of my closet where I keep my workout clothes. I started pulling it all out and piling it on the bed. Just how many yoga/pilates/running pants can a girl have? Now, in my defense I will say I was a Pilates instructor for a few years and I needed to look the part so I probably accumulated more than the average exercise devotee would, but girls this was ridiculous. I just looked at all of it and thought, “why?”

The answer hit me between the eyes. I wasn’t happy with myself so I just kept buying new exercise clothes. This is hysterical to me! It’s as if wearing new exercise clothes would make me look more fit, slim, trim, and maybe even taller! I guess I thought just putting them on was enough of a workout. What a delusion! The question was still calling out to me, “Why Rene’, why?”

Being a Christian and not being happy with yourself just doesn’t go together. It is like an oxymoron. They don’t need to be in the same sentence. Now don’t get me wrong ladies (and men if you are reading), I do believe we are to take care of ourselves physically and that looking your best is important. But not being happy with yourself, well that is just not acceptable.

Yes, we make mistakes and yes we fail miserably sometimes in this life, but not being happy with yourself just doesn’t make sense. I think all of us have forgotten  in whose image we have been made. Let me remind you (and me) of this one verse that should change all misconceptions we have about ourselves.

So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:27

I find it interesting that after God made light out of darkness, the sun, moon, stars, land and sea, after He made plants and fish, animals big and small, He made us. The interesting thing is what He said in verse 26, “let us make man in our image“.  None of the other things were made in His image, only we humans.

So now you see my point, to not be happy with yourself is just not an option. Sure, there will always be someone taller, thinner, buffer, (is that a word?), more beautiful, but there will NEVER be another you. You were tailor made in the image of our Creator. No matter how you “feel” about yourself, you can’t get away from this fact. I love the way God didn’t say:

“Okay now lets make some humans. What about a couple of things to see out of and to hear out of and oh, what about walking and talking, we will need something for that won’t we?”

No! God chose to make us like Him. He had The Original to base His new creation on and this is the one time it was okay to be a copycat!

So with this great spring weather get in that closet and clean it out. If you bought something because you don’t like yourself, chances are it is still hanging in the closet. Nothing magical happened when you put it on. You are still you and God is still God. He is on His throne watching and waiting for you to look in the mirror and do a happy dance because you my friend, look just like your Daddy!
